Free Chiro Exam: Road Trips
July 15, 2008 7:17 amGoing on a road trip always sounds like a fun idea. The thought of traveling the countryside and seeing all the different landmarks, sights, and towns that there are in this country is a great idea. There is only one downfall to the road trip and that is the fact that you are going to have to sit in a car for an extended period of time. Now, some people are made for the road and other are not, either way, if you are sitting in a car for over a few hours there are some things that you should take into consideration as far as your spine and back is concerned.
The first thing that you should do before going on a road trip is to get adjusted by your chiropractor. It’s better to be prepped and in tip-top condition when you start the trip so that you have an easier time staying in that state. When you are driving in the car you should always remember to sit with good posture. Now we all know that the longer you are on the road the harder this task is. You can find endless posture aids on the internet and if you don’t have time to pick on up simply bringing a towel to roll up behind your back will suffice. It will conform to your back and the seat and really be a reminder to sit up straight and keep your back aligned. The last thing that you may have to worry about is sleeping. While out on the road you will most likely be staying in a hotel in a strange bed that is uncomfortable to you. Getting rest is what keeps your body reenergized and it is very important that while on a road trip you get the rest you need. By taking even a short 15-minute walk you will give your body the chance to expend some of that pent up energy and get a better sleep.
Try to remember these tips while you are on your trip and you will have a more pleasant trip than ever before. Also remember that when you come back from your trip to see your chiropractor again for another adjustment. This will conclude your recovery back into a well balanced state.

Choosing whether to go see a chiropractor or an orthopedist can be a difficult decision if you don’t know what is taking place within your body. It really depends on what you have going on and how severe your back pain is. If you find yourself with any type of back pain you should at least consider going to see one of these specialists. To figure out which one you should see look below:
You should see a chiropractor if:
- You are having acute back pain
- To go in for a initial check up or assessment
- You are having neck pain
You should see an orthopedist if:
- You are having severe pain
- You are having pain and are having problems controlling your bowels or bladder
- You are having pain with fever, chills, or sweats
- You are having pain that awakens you at night
- You have back pain with associated leg pain
- There is numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs
Any of the symptoms above should be seen by the proper doctor and you can really tell the differences when you list out the symptoms that each doctor is suited for. A chiropractor is mainly for the relief of stress and pressure from the back and neck. They use their techniques in order to adjust your spine so that the entire body works better. An orthopedist takes care of severe problems that usually require surgery or some form of immediate care.
If you are having any severe pain in your back or are suffering from any of the symptoms above you should see a doctor right away.

Cracking your back, this act usually creates a lot of questions because most don’t know if it is actually helping or hurting. You can find a lot of mixed answers on the internet that don’t really help you decide one way or another. A lot of people crack their backs and roll their necks each day in order to relieve pain or pressure that has been built up from things like: sitting in one position for too long or doing something stressful on the back or neck.
Cracking your back and neck has been said to be a cause of arthritis. It has been said by many chiropractors that cracking your back or rolling your neck is not harmful and therefore is safe to do as long as you do it in the right correct way and don’t force it. An example of the wrong technique would be to over-extend your muscles and joints. If you were to force your neck with your hands until it popped, that would be an improper and dangerous way to relieve pain or pressure.
There are many ways to crack your back without overstretching and damaging your spine. Having someone step on your back while you lay flay face down on the floor is one common way that people crack their backs. By lying face down on the floor and having someone who is not extremely heavy place their foot on your spine and apply pressure, you can successfully crack your back. You may hear some popping or cracking noises while doing this and although it sounds unpleasant, no harm is being done.
So you can put your fears to rest about continuously cracking your back. Cracking your back at home is like practicing amateur chiropractic at your own risk. So be sure not to over exert/stretch yourself. The safe practice of cracking your back and neck helps you relieve back and neck pain on a temporary basis only. Set up an appointment with a chiropractor if you find yourself having back/neck pain on a regular basis.

The dentist is another doctor that should be seen often, as well as your normal doctor for check-ups.
This balance that you create in your life is what keeps your body going and is what makes you feel great. Chiropractic is not the only answer to making your life more enriched; it is just an added feature that you should think about inputting into your life as a bonus.

You may not think that you would ever see a chiropractor in a hospital but these days chiropractors are becoming more accepted in mainstream medicine. In 2003 there were over 500 chiropractors working in hospitals. You might find yourself asking why would a chiropractor be found in a hospital and what service could they really provide while there. For most chiropractors that are found in hospitals they are usually stationed in the emergency room. The patients that can be treated safely with chiropractic and are suffering from neck or back pain are then take care of by the in house chiropractor.
Having these chiropractors in house at local hospitals has already benefited many people who have recently taken trips to the emergency room. Their back and/or neck pain has been significantly reduced if not completely taken away by the chiropractor.
Having a chiropractor within the hospital is a good idea and has been working well for the hospitals that are already using these specialists on a permanent basis. The number has been growing slowly over the past few years as doctors and hospitals are seeing what a benefit it is to have these chiropractors as a part of the team.

Free Chiro Exam: Office Job
7:14 amAs I sit here and write to you about chiropractic and, more recently, all of the things that can slowly hurt your spine or back I’ve realized something. Sitting here, in this chair, my back starts to hurt, and I shift around quite a bit trying to find a more comfortable position so that the pain goes away. Then it hit me, all this time I’ve been writing about how little things affect our health and lives and here is this chair every day driving my back/spine nuts!
If you find yourself to be someone who sits in a chair/office all day you probably feel the same way and know what I’m talking about. For those of you that are contained in an office for eight hours a day for five days a week then there are some things that you need to take into consideration. The first thing being that you may want to start seeing a chiropractor. Why? Because you can start to counterattack the damage that is happening to your spine through chiropractic visits. The second thing that I would recommend doing is taking note of your posture. By sitting straight up and keeping good posture you are going to keep your spine in a more balanced position and eventually it will start to feel more comfortable sitting that way. The third idea that you could also try is changing your chair. If you feel that your chair is not offering you as much support as you need then you should consider buying a new one. Even though chairs are getting to be a bit expensive, it will be worth it in the long run.
Hopefully these few ideas will help improve the time that you spend at work and allow you to not become agitated while sitting there day after day.

If a group of people had it the worst as far as back pain goes it would have to be the soldiers currently working over in Afghanistan and Iraq. Most people aren’t aware that a soldier typically has to carry a 200-pound rucksack across the battlefields and that others are equipped with 50-pound flak jackets as well as a rifle and ammunition. All of this strain can really cause some terrible damage to the back and spine and this is why it is important that soldiers see a chiropractor whenever they can in order to assess the level of stress they are putting on their spines every day.
Soldiers that are returning from active duty should think about seeing a chiropractor right away so that they can begin treatment for all of the damage their spines may have taken. There are some chiropractors that are offering their services for free to soldiers in order to show their appreciation as well as their concern for the troops we have. In general, soldiers go through the same things that civilians do except on a much more severe scale.
Most of these soldiers would love to have the ability to see a chiropractor for free, especially after coming back from a period of active duty. The problem is that not very many people know about the benefits of chiropractic and the immense help that it can offer to those who have suffered a lot of strain in their back/spine. Even without the free exams I would highly recommend seeing a chiropractor if you are a soldier and are experiencing any type of pain in the spine/back.

Free Chiro Exam: Habits
7:12 amBy habit, we humans do a lot of things that can eventually cause back and spinal problems. This is why a chiropractor is necessary in order to correct all the small things that build up with our spines every day. Small things like, for men, keeping your wallet always on one side of your pants and sitting on it every day; or, for women, always putting your purse on one certain shoulder causes this small damage that takes place over time.
These little things that most people don’t think about can cause back problems over time and that is why it is important that you see a chiropractor often in order to keep your spine and back in a healthy state. Identifying these little things that you do to yourself is the first step to keeping your spine healthier. Because there is so much that can really affect your health it is hard to catch every aspect; but keeping an eye on the things that I’ve mentioned here and in other posts is going to improve your spinal health. You’ll be able to feel it too if you keep consistent with monitoring these “habits” in your everyday life.
Although chiropractic should be used on a regular basis, it shouldn’t be used to cure all the aches and pains that come up daily. These things should be controlled by you and your lifestyle, which is why it is good to look for these things and eliminate them from your life. Keep your wallet out of your pocket when you sit and switch up shoulders for that heavy purse.

Free Chiro Exam: Shoe Shopping
7:11 amSpeaking closely to a previous topic, flip flops, you should also be aware of any other footwear that you have. Even though flips flops can cause the most damage because they are usually so flimsy and not made with the spine in mind; the shoes that you wear on a regular basis can become a problem as well.
Look at the pairs of shoes that you own and pick out the few that you wear on a regular basis. Check these few things: the cushioning at the bottom, the way the shoe bottom is shaped (the arc of the shoe), and the size. Your foot is unique to you and that means that your shoe has to conform to your foot in order to properly support you while you walk.
The cushioning of the shoe is a large factor. The insole of the shoe should have enough cushioning to provide your foot with a comfortable step when you walk. I some cases the insole that is provided with the shoe from the manufacturer is not enough. This is why it is important that you buy a better insole for your shoe if you don’t feel like you are getting enough padding with each step. Remember, the point is to reduce as much impact from walking as you can.
The arc of the shoe is something that cannot be changed; this is why it is important to look at this before buying a shoe. Sure, you may know your shoe size and love a shoe so much that you are going to buy it without trying it on but you should reconsider. The way your foot is shaped and the way the shoe arc is shaped should be similar if not a perfect fit. This is a bit harder for those people who have a taller arc in their foot than those who are close to none at all. If a shoe does not fit comfortably against the arc of your foot than it is going to be uncomfortable in the long run causing you pain in the lower back and spine.
Lastly, the size of the shoe is something that a lot of people get wrong. I know it comes as a surprise but it is only because there really isn’t any information out in people’s faces about how a shoe is supposed to fit while they are purchasing it. A general rule of thumb is that when you try a shoe on you should have space about the width of two fingers between your toes and the end of the shoe. This will create the most comfortable fit for you and result in a less stressful walk.
Keeping these things in mind you should be able to pick out a quality shoe that will support you while you walk every day. Happy shoe shopping!

Free Chiro Exam: Flip Flops
7:10 amWith so many things affecting our health in the world today it is important to know about each of them. This helps you with staying aware of the risks that you are taking with your health as well as informing you of everything that you can do in order to keep yourself healthy. You would be surprised to find out what common things that you or your family does each day that harms the spine/back and causes you to have pain. Many people first think about lifting objects or twisting the spine in some sort of accident. While these things are immediate you should also be thinking about the different things that you subject your spine and back to over time.
One of the most common things that people do that can cause later back/spine problems is walking. Yes, walking, but it is not as simple as that. Think about yourself in the summer and what kind of footwear you have on. For most people and almost all younger kids/teenagers/adults the answer to that is flip flops. You are probably wearing a pair right now and although they are comfortable and fashionable they can cause some damage over a longer period of time. The reason for this being that they don’t offer you any type of support and the constant impact from walking travels up your legs and into your spine.
For most people, wearing flips flops is an easy alternative to tying up shoes or putting on socks. It’s understandable why people would choose flip flops over shoes, especially during the summer. That is why it is important to make sure that you are buying a quality pair of flip flops. Make sure that the bottom has at least some cushion and that it stays on your foot without any trouble. The worst flip flop you can have is one where you are trying to keep it on with your toes because it puts the whole foot under stress.
Buying a quality flip flop for the summer is imperative to keeping your spine and back healthy. Without a good pair of flip flops you are sure to have some future problems that need to be taken care of by a chiropractor.
